How do you wake up? Waking up is one of the most important parts of our day, but most of us don’t think much about how to make it meaningful. How you wake up can set your whole tone for the day. You know that phrase, “woke up on the wrong side of the bed”? For a while, mornings with my children were even harder than bedtime. When they were toddlers and used to wake up very early we were often groggy. One or the other of us – usually my husband (major gratitude for this, babe) – would get out of bed to have some morning play time with the baby. But as my children got older they started to sleep in more. Now I can’t get them OUT of bed in the mornings! I know, not such a problem on the weekends!
My children and I had a conversation about how we might make our mornings easier for everyone. My husband is out the door before we’re out of bed in the morning…except for Thursday mornings when the kids know they get to have “breakfast club” with their dad. This is a time that they can all count on – no matter how many evening meetings my husband had that week – when they can share a meal together and steal some quality time during the week. That arrangement leaves me alone with them 4 days a week. We wondered how we could have smoother, more enjoyable morning routines together. For my daughter this was pretty simple – pick out her clothes the night before. She is really into fashion. Not all of us understand her fashion sense (she has been known to pair a leopard print sweater with a floral print dress, but who cares), but she cares deeply about her clothing selection and likes to have time to enjoy her ritual of outfit choosing.
My son is a huge Adam Levine fan. He loves to listen to Maroon 5. We carefully monitor the songs for appropriate lyrics. He said that he would like to “wake up” to Adam Levine. Easy fix – we set up the Ipad with a Spotify station for that. Then there is me. I know coffee is an option, but most coffee is very acidic. If you thought more about the chemistry of most coffee it wouldn’t be the kind of thing you would choose to put in your digestive tract first thing every morning. Ayurveda has an option because the founders of yoga lifestyle didn’t have access to coffee (although they did love tea)! Lemon juice in a glass of water! It is that simple, folks. I drink my lemon juice in my water while my son listens to his music and my daughter indulges her creative fashion sense. Our mornings have been much better!
If you have woken up to the sound of an alarm clock and a cup of coffee for most of your adult life. If your children need to be physically dragged out of bed. Never fear – there is hope for you, too! Please note – if you struggle with acid reflux, GERD, or are prone to anger then I do not recommend this remedy for you.
